Profile Information

About Me:
I am a Master Naturalist and currently own an urban wildlife habitat here in Ft. Wayne, IN. That is; a sustainable environmental landscape in an urban setting. Call it urban nature gardening, urban habitat stewardship, or urban habitat health aide, performing some much needed CPR on the urban landscape. I hope to educate others on the necessity of being environmentally responsible by converting more areas of urban land to support wildlife.

I teach others to plant more native that is more enviro friendly;cost effective;mostly maintenance free and self sustaining. I have converted a large 1/3 acre urban lot into a mosaic of ecosystems(sites) creating more biodiversity for wildlife. We are not only benefiting wildlife, but we are benefiting ourselves by interacting with nature on a daily basis. We grow organic crops on same habitat and are planning to implement more SPIN(small plot-intensive) farming next spring. The city neighborhood code enforcement has been called to the property due to "weeds," and it so happened the field supervisor; code enforcement sent out is an ethno-botanist,and ended up asking me for advice.

I work at a 22 acre nursery that has supplied me an additional 100 plantings for the habitat, and hopefully will supply plantings for a city wide community gardening program that we are sorely lacking. Hope to do more nature education, or more habitat workshops. Looking forward to the Sugar Bush Program through Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center come Jan-March. I will teach again the art of tapping, sap collecting, woodcrafts, at Larry Yoders Sugar Bush;Huntertown. Hey, I get paid with organic maple syrup. I would like to find somebody, anybody in the state that designs and installs green roofs!(vegetative roofs).

I am also an crafter/artist creating home/yard art out of cement, grout, tile, stones, glass, shells, and whatever else I can find to incorporate into my works. I am hard at work developing a website for these items! Check out my softer side on braids.etsy.com.

Recycling Wronged

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management wants to use the economy as a pretext for reneging on recycling grants it promised to several communities and environmental agencies. Hard economic times certainly force people to set priorities, but this decision suggests that protecting the environment is not among Gov. Mitch Daniels’ priorities. The agency announced this week it was suspending at least six state grants that help pay for recycling and pollution prevention programs for the nex… Continue

Ice, Wind Storms and Power Outages. Why is it Always the Trees Fault?

Up here in Fort- Waste- a- Lot we are still reel'in and deal'in with the aftermath of the ice storm of the century, or the storm of my lifetime so far. The ice here from the storm was unprecendented. The crews from AEP/IMP had gathered in force to fight the elements of ice, cold and wind to get the power back on. In the news around here there has been a lot of yucking it up for the "energy heroes" out saving us from the depths of power outage despair, teeth gnashing, and woe-to-me's. It has been… Continue

Conservationist Rieth Leaves " Invaluable Legacy"

Mary Jane George Rieth, 92, a longtime Indiana conservationist and philanthropist, died Wednesday at her home in Goshen. The Goshen College announcement said she and her husband, Lee, co-founded the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center near Wolf Lake in 1964. The privately owned environmental education site in Noble County includes forest, prairie and wetland ecosystems. “I join many others at Goshen College in grieving Mary Jane Rieth’s passing from this Earth and praying with her family,… Continue

How Does Wal-mart keep Getting Away With Convincing Reporters and Environmentalists It Is Serious About Sustainability, and Not Just Greenwashing?

How does Wal-Mart keep getting away with convincing reporters and environmentalists that it is serious about sustainability? It took Jack Neff, who writes for Advertising Age, to point out the hypocrisy of Wal-Mart¹s environmental policy. Of course, he did it quite subtly but the point is clear. walmartwatch.com

Midwest Trading in St. Charles IL... they have everything you need! http://www.midwest-trading.com/
I am sort of half-assed so I would just cobble stuff together with pond liner and old timber... it would still work but not be as pretty.

I know what you mean...I only live 2 miles away from Holiday Park and I carpooled! Plus I'm always looking to lower carbon footprint too...just got a new Honda Fit few months ago (before financial meltdown!) which is getting almost 40 MPG plus it's a ULEV (ultra low emissions vehicle) and it's not even a hybrid? That's almost 75% better fuel economy than my previous Honda! Well thanks for writing and stay warm up there!

thanks for the note...I don't really have any environmental 'agenda' other than being a life-long tree-hugger and activist. I try to live as simply as possible, reduce/ re-use/ recycle everything I can and encourage others to do the same! I just got into gardening a few years ago and tilled up half my back yard to grow herbs and veggies (ok maybe only 1/3 of the yard but will be expanding in the spring.!) I don't have lots of time lately for activism, other than via web and e-mail, because I'm back in school full-time to get my nursing degree. Afetr that I plan to have more time to devote to environmental causes...thanks for asking!
