Public lecture: Vandana Shiva, “Soil Not Oil: Food Security in Times of Climate Change”

Dr. Vandana Shiva is a physicist, ecologist, activist, editor and author of many books. In India she has established Navdanya, a movement for biodiversity conservation and farmers’ rights, and she is the Founding Director of Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, a network of researchers specializing in ecology, health and sustainability. She has established a school for sustainability, Bija Vidyapeeth, on the Navdanya Biodiversity Farm in Doon Valley. Her most recent books are Earth Democracy and Water Wars. She is on the Board of International Forum on Globalisation and World Future Council and she is the Vice President of the global movement Slow Food International.

She will be speaking on “Soil, Not Oil: Food Security in Times of Climate Change.” Diversity and decentralization are the dual principles to build economies beyond oil and to deal with the climate vulnerability that is the residue of the age of oil.

Tickets for this lecture are available at the Goshen College Welcome Center by calling (574) 535-7566. They are also available at the Maple City Market which is open from 8am-8pm Mon-Sat Advance sales price is $10 general and $5 students. Prices at the door will be $12 and $7.

Dr. Shiva’s visit to Goshen College is sponsored by the Ecological Stewardship Committee of Goshen College, the agroecology program of the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College and Organic Valley Co-op.
