I want to throw out a point here and see what people think.
I know that there are a lot of people out there that think that man is not causing global warming. They think that carbon emissions have nothing to do with the warming we see. This was a very popular notion before.
The cause is irrelevent. THE PERCEPTION IS WHAT IS RELEVANT NOW!
Since the common perception of the world is that man causes global warming through carbon emissions, then we must act and act now. If we do not take action then we are irresponsible in the eyes of the people of the world.
We can disagree on the causes, but the US should not look like they are not doing anything about carbon emissions....because the perception is that we are not. Thus we will be singled out and blamed for the consequences.
So my point is that the cause does not matter here. The people that say that humans are not causing global warming and that global warming is a natural cyclical event are completely missing the point. The perception of cause is what matters the most.
As a stay at home Dad with a 3 and 6 year old, I see a complete lack of interest in doing anything about the environment everyday. When I go to the grocery with my canvas bags, I see people getting lots of food in plastic containers and then carrying it out in plastic bags. I notice how recycling seems to be getting a back seat in media coverage. I see soccer moms driving SUV's, Hummers and other gas guzzling vehicles with safety for kids being a larger concern over fuel economy. If we are to change the perception of reducing green house gases, we need to make individuals very aware of how small actions can add up to big changes. I think we need to start lighting a fire under consumers and come up with a penalty system for those who blatantly disregard our environment and an award system for those who help it.
I am a college graduate in natural resources management. Througout my life I have always embraced the conservative political values of self-reliance at the expense of entitlements, small government and a strong national defense. I have never waivered from these values.
Recently my wife introduced me to Al Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth", which focuses on the global warming issue. As a scientist and professional resource manager I must say that this movie is overwhelmingly convincing! I believe it to be true! The best scientists in the world all agree on this issue. Carbon dioxide production, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, forests, etc. is causing a dangerous and rapid rate of increase in carbon dioxide levels which can have catastorophic effects on our enviornment - soon!
Most politicians find it convenient to take the Pearl Harbor approach to this problem? Airplanes? What airplanes? I highly recommend that this movie be seen and passed along to all who will see it.
