Epworth-Sierra Club Eco-Film Series Announces Fall 2010 Schedule

INDIANAPOLIS – Food and its impact on our environment will be the focus this fall of the continuing eco-film series sponsored by the Epworth United Methodist Church Green Team and the Heartlands Group of the Sierra Club Hoosier Chapter. All are welcome to attend these free movies at 7 p.m. at the church, 6450 Allisonville Road, and join in the discussion afterward.

Friday, Sept. 10 - Vanishing of the Bees

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. More information at: www.vanishingbees.com

Friday, Oct. 1: Double Feature: King Corn/Big River

A 50-minute version of the award-winning film King Corn, a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. King Corn will be followed by Big River, a 30-minute look at the environmental impact their acre of corn has had on the people and places downstream — all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. More information on both films at: www.kingcorn.net

Friday, Nov. 5: Food Inc.

Academy Award nominee Food Inc. lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. View trailer at: www.foodincmovie.com

All movies will be shown at 7 p.m. at the church, 6450 Allisonville Road. Snacks and soft drinks will be served. Free-will donations will be accepted to help offset costs.

But wait, there's more! Please join us on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, for our Second Annual Soup Swap from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Make a big pot of soup, freeze it in six, one-quart containers, and bring them to the Soup Swap. You’ll be fed some delicious soup, laugh out loud during the “Telling of the Soup,” and go home with six different quarts of yummy soup to keep you warm in February. This is a Souper way to spend a winter evening between NFL playoff weekends!

For more information on the program or the Epworth Green Team, call Epworth at 251-1481.
